Frequently asked questions

Creating a legally valid digital signature online in India.

How do I create a digital signature online?

A legally valid digital signature is created by obtaining a Class 3 Digital Signature Certificate from a licensed Certifying Authority, generated online through PAN and Aadhaar-based verification and a short video, and stored on a USB token. You then use that certificate to sign documents online.

Can I make a digital signature for free?

You can create a free drawn or typed signature image, but that is only an electronic mark with limited legal standing. A certificate-based digital signature, the kind accepted for government and legal filing, needs a paid DSC from a Certifying Authority.

Is an online digital signature legally valid in India?

Yes. A digital signature made with a valid DSC is recognised under the Information Technology Act and is accepted for e-filing, contracts and official documents, provided the certificate is from a CCA-licensed authority and is current.

What is the difference between an online signature and a DSC?

Online signature can mean anything from a scanned image to a certificate-based signature. A DSC specifically is the cryptographic certificate, tied to your verified identity and stored on a token, that makes a digital signature trustworthy and legally strong.

Do I need Aadhaar to create a digital signature?

Aadhaar-based eKYC is the quickest paperless route, but identity can also be verified with PAN and other accepted documents plus a video. Aadhaar is convenient, not the only option.
